ARAWAK BRAVES SURRENDERS TO POLICE

Posted by coachmarius on August 30, 2008

There is a saying ‘you can’t win nothin with the police’.  This is probly what Braves told themselves as they came up against the police in a bball game at Bay Street on Thursday night. Braves, after taking control midway in the game, went into a massive panic attack when Adrian and Shane fouled out early in the forth quarter.

The Police team was off to a quick start mainly due to the poor playing of the Braves starters. Defensively they were not playing together and the police took advantage of this and scored points easily on the inside. Offensively there was alot of player movement but the passing was not up to standard. Their playing improved after a couple of substitutions were made and they slowly took control of the game in the next three quarters. This was due mainly to great efforts by Damian, Adrian and Shane and good shooting by Andrew. The defence also improved and the Police found it dificult to score. Then the officials went on a foul hunting mission and as usual Braves got the most of this five minute madness. By the time it was over Braves was still leading but two of their main players was in serious foul trouble. Then when they both receive their fifth fouls in the fourth all hell broke loose in the Braves camp. No other player stepped up in the leadership position. They just surrendered the game behind a series of poor excuses and very poor court playing often making very fundamental errors and handed the game to a surprised Police team. The loss took the lime light away from Damian Bovell who had just played a monster game. He left the game in tears.

I hope that this experince will make the others realize that a team should not be dependant on one or two players but that everyone should commit and contribute to the team. They must work on their skills as you never know where you will be needed once the game begin. ASK YOURSELF NOT WHAT CAN THE TEAM DO FOR YOU BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR THE TEAM.  Let me make it clear that this is not my quote.

GAME STATS…33 OF 66 FIELF GOALS…13 OF 22 FREE THROWS…..0 OF 3 THREE POINT SHOTS.                          36 REBOUNDS…..41 TURNOVERS….18 ASSIST….18 STEALS….5 BLOCKS.

ANDREW IS HIS NAME AND SHOOTING IS HIS GAME.

Posted by coachmarius on August 29, 2008

Andrew Gibbs is a shooter. That is what he loves to do. So it is not surprising that shooting is what he has brought to the Braves team. He was a member of a group of players that played for the Baseliners bball team for a long time. They even enjoyed a prolong period in the division one. So the adjustment he has had to make must have been enormous because he is now playing with a relatively inexperience team.

Andrew carries the bulk of the offensive responsibility of the Braves team and the Coach is hoping that the other members of the team would step up and assist. In the last three games he has stepped up his scoring output and with the improved playing of Damian Bovell, Adrian brome and Shane Worrell is helping the team to score 73 points per game. The U21 team players have all been trying to improve their scoring abllity inspired no doubt by the shooting clinics put on by Andrew at these games. He just needs to be more active in the third and fourth quarters as these are periods that matter in bball. The team have four games left and we all hope that he continues this rich run of form. SHOOT OUT THEIR EYES. This advice does not include the eyes of the coach though.

ADRIAN SAY CONGRATS TO BRAVES U21 ON THEIR VICTORY.

Posted by coachmarius on August 24, 2008

While the U21 team was taking care of business on the bball court the Coach received a text from Adrian asking about the position of the game. The Coach could not reply at the time but directly after the game he again reported to Adrian of the good performance of the team and the result. Adrian then asked to extend hearty congratulations to the team on his behalf. He said that he saw Hanil down there and that we should get him in the U21 team to help with the board power. Hanif will return to Bim on August 30th.

ARAWAK BRAVES U21′S FIGHT FOR FIRST WIN AGAINST WARRIORS

Posted by coachmarius on August 18, 2008

Arawak Braves U21 team behind big offensive games by Andi Daniel and Chadd Greaves and a solid defensive team effort won their first game in the competition. The warriors are no easy walk overs as their team is made up of players from the Garrison school championship team and a few even play in the division three competition. They are from a lively bball area so to defeat them would take a big effort.

The starting five of Darren Small, Damian Bovell, Chadd Greaves, Demario Prescod and Jamal Thompson started quietly.  They ran their offensive set to perfection and created easy offence. It was the defence, however, that was creating the greatest headace for the Warriors.  They had to work hard to get their points. They were able to score off the turnovers of the Braves. This helped to keep the score line close in the first two quarters.

Andi Daniel was back from his trip to have his first game and how important that turned to be. He combined well with Damian and provided an extra rebounder.  Darren started with a couple of turnovers but settled down to play well on the defensive side. Chadd on the other hand was having a hard time and was very indecisive. The perimeter players moved the ball around and put the ball inside very often for easy baskts. Then Damian  picked up his fourth foul with 6 sec left in the second quarter.  The half ended with Arawak Braves on 23 and the Warriors on 21.

The Braves started the third quarter without their inspirational Captain and they seemed determined to do well. The Warriors switch to a man to man which Braves took some time to handle. Jamal (mouse) Thompson stepped up and created some offence by attacking the key and dishing off to open players. This seemed to inspire Andi and Chadd because all of a sudden these two players became ignited and the Warriors for a little while could not stop these from scoring. This forced the Warriors to go to a full court press which caused a little panic in the Braves camp but with the reintroduction of their Captain they settled and held on for their first win of the competition. The score ended Braves 56 and Warriors 53.  WELL PLAYED BRAVES.

GAME STATS….22 OF 65 FIELD GOALS….9 OF 23 FREE THROWS….1OF 6 3POINT SHOTS.

32 DEF REB….13 OFF REB….30 TURNOVERS…..10 ASSIT….11 STEALS…4 BLK SHOTS.

HURRICANE BRAVES BLOW CHALLENGERS AWAY.

Posted by coachmarius on August 17, 2008

Challengers left the YMCA knowing that we are in our hurricane season. They were blown away by Arawak Braves. It mattered little that only five of their players turned up nothing to do with us. How often have you seen five players carry full teams to the bone.  Arawak Braves made sure that this did not happen on the night. Fresh from being blown out by Mayhill in their last game they man handled the Challengers.

The starters started slowly but they were scoring the ball. they ran the offensive system and they moved the ball the ball beautifully. The defence that was absent in the last game suddenly came back and challengers had to work hard to score their baskets. Andrew Gibbs and Ron Taitt had a fairly good start in this game and along with Damian Bovell and Adrian Bromes on the inside they kept the scoreboard moving. This quarter ended with Arawak Braves on 21 and Challengers on 9.

The second quarter saw a completely new team for the Braves on the court.  Challengers started to attack the defence more causing the braves to commit numerous fouls which they converted at free throw line. Braves also took time out to miss many easy baskets with Andrew off the court and allowed the challengers to control the boards with Adrian off the court. The half time score was 33 Braves and 21 Challengers.

In the next two quarters Braves took total control. The Challengers found that with the return of the starters that it was harder to penetrate the defence. the effort seem to tire them for as the game went on they found difficulty in keeping pace with the Braves. They found themselves having to play a fresh team often as the coach made five man substitutions. They even started to attack the officials. In this half Braves scored 50 points while Challengers managed only 21.

Andrew 15, Ron 12 and Damian 14 led the offensive effort with the support of Roland 10, Chadd 10, Adrian 6, Shane 6, and Demario 6. This was complemented with a big team defensive effort that included 24 steals and 3 big blocks by Adrian. The U21 unit finished off the game with a youthfull 10 to 2 run in the last three minutes of the game.

GAME STATS. 28 OF 92 FIELD GOALS…….4 OF 9 FREE THROWS………1 OF 4 THREE POINT SHOTS

31 DEFENSIVE REB ……..23 OFFENSIVE REB……16 TURNOVERS….17 ASSIST…..24 STEALS AND 3 BLOCKS.

BRAVES U21 AND BRAVES SENIOR TEAM TO CLASH ON TUESDAY NIGHT.

Posted by coachmarius on August 11, 2008

It will be a keenly contested game.  A game that the coach hopes will sharpen the juniors for their up coming match against Warriors on Thursday.  It will be a test of their character.  Will they see it as oldsters vs youngsters match? or will they see it as an opportunity to get their act together for the match against Warriors. I wonder.

ARAWAK BRAVES U21′S LOSE CLOSE FIRST GAME.

Posted by coachmarius on August 11, 2008

The disappointment showed on all the faces of the players after the game. They played their hearts out and yet they lost.  Their shoulders dropped, their heads were down as they slowly walked toward the benches. No one pointed fingers at the other. Everyone agreed the they could have done better.

The truth is that in their first game they performed above expectations. They have nothin to be ashamed of. They were very competitive and should have won the game.

Led by outstanding performances by Captain Damian Bovell and new off guard Orel Richmond and supported by some solid efforts by Demario Prescod, Chadd Greaves, Ricardo Cyrus, and Jamal Thompson the team fought all the way but ended being the loser by five points. They were out rebounded by the taller players of the  City Ballers on the offensive boards and this is where the game was lost. They were competitive in all the other areas. The coach will have to pay more attention to this part of the teams play in future.\

The final score was City Ballers 60 and Arawak braves 55
